This week in Lewiston at 409 Sabattus St.
Earlier this week, Black Diamond Detailing owners Abdirahman Saeed and Abdinur Mohamed cut the ribbon, along with city officials and others.
The couple, both recent graduates of Top Gun, a 12-week startup acceleration program run by the Maine Entrepreneur Center, are also hiring.
Originally a mobile company, the company now has a physical base and two service areas in Lewiston.
“As the company grows, we will be hiring more people,” they said in a joint email to Mainebiz. A company offering quick general cleaning rents a space on Sabattus Street.
With the new physical location, Black Diamond plans to expand services to include on-site exterior detailing. The current promotion includes an express car cleaning for $65.
The owners said that while they explored other places in Auburn and Portland, Lewiston was their home and therefore the perfect place for their first location.
“Having a physical building means a lot to us,” Mohamed said. “This has been our goal for a long time and I’m glad it finally came true.”
According to city officials, Black Diamond Detailing is the first business of its kind in Lewiston owned by black Somalis.
“When young entrepreneurs choose Lewiston as the place to build their lives and careers, we grow as a community,” said Lewiston Mayor Carl Shelain. “This new business also demonstrates that Lewiston is a land of opportunity for our immigrant community.”
This year the owner of Black Diamond participated in Top Gun. They said it was a fantastic experience in which they learned how to budget and other aspects of the business that were new to them.
“During Top Gun, these young people worked hard, learned their lessons, and started working with clients,” said Shanna Cox, President and CEO of the Lewiston Auburn Chamber of Commerce. “Their commitment to business development has been evident since Top Gun and the result of that hard work is what we celebrate here today.”
